Artist's Statement
My art melds traditional ways of working in metal with modern conveniences. I respect the craftsmanship inherent in the traditional arts of metalwork, but modern techniques allow me to expand the boundaries of what can be accomplished. For example, I often use welding not just for its structural utility but also for the interesting textures one can make with it.
I feel the structural elements of a piece should also be part of the ornamentation. While I believe the form a piece takes should absolutely be dependent on its function, working primarily with metal gives me the ability to make unconventional forms that still make useful pieces.
Metal allows me to be inspired by nature. As in nature, my pieces are often assymetrical with every piece a unique creation. Although metal is not organic, it can nonetheless be almost a living entity dictating the form the piece will take. I enjoy not only allowing the object dictate its own form, but also having the metal feel as if it were organic and grew into its current shape.
Above all, each of my designs, down to the smallest of pieces, is made with the highest level of uncompromising craftmanship and care.
